How an NPI works
What is an NPI?
An NPI is the 10-digit ID in the public NPPES file. Health plans and pharmacies use it to identify a person or an organization. This search reads that file and shows the name, address, and taxonomy on the number.
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2?
Type 1 is a person, such as a physician. Type 2 is an organization, such as a clinic or a group practice. You can search either one here. A group and the physicians in it have different numbers.
How do I find a provider’s NPI?
Enter the 10 digits if you have them. If you don’t, enter the person’s name or the organization’s name. If several people share the name, open More options and add a city, then confirm the number on the record before you use it.
What does deactivated mean?
Deactivated means NPPES lists that NPI as no longer active. The number can still show up on older claims. It does not tell you whether a state license is still in force. Check the license page for that.
How is an NPI different from a license?
A license is a state board’s permission to practice. An NPI is an identification number. Someone can have an active NPI and an expired license, or a license and no NPI in the file you searched. When you credential a person, check both, and check the exclusion lists.
